The heart of Islam - the Arabian Peninsular - is a place of stark contrasts and deep secrets.
Holy Cities, Seven Countries in the Arabian Peninsular
Vast oil reserves lie hidden under equally vast uninhabited deserts. Enormous wealth is displayed in gleaming modern cities, while nomadic tribesmen in the desert cling tenaciously to their ancient way of life, as this land goes through great transition. To reap a financial harvest from the enormous oil reserves, the Peninsula's national leaders have turned to western technology. After centuries of protective isolation, the people of the Arabian Peninsula have been brought face-to-face with the rest of the world during the last 50 years.
The seven countries of the Arabian Peninsula are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Yemen. The two holiest cities in the Muslim world, Mecca and Medina, are in Saudi Arabia, the largest nation on the Peninsula.
A massive Islamic missionary effort is coordinated by the Muslim World League based in Mecca and vast sums of money are used to propagate Islam around the world. The world's largest printing presses are located here which produce 28 million copies of the Qur'an every year for worldwide distribution.
A people with a spiritual hunger in the Arabian Peninsular
Most of the population of Arabia are descendants of Shem. There were two primary peoples who inhabited Arabia. One was largely nomadic while the other group inhabited the rain-fed upper regions of Yemen.
The Bedouins are scattered across the huge desert region and their lifestyle has become symbolic of many basic Arab values. They are a generous and hospitable people, yet can be aggressive towards outsiders or when honor is threatened.
Large numbers of expatriate workers live in the nations of the Arabian peninsular. In Oman 70% of the workforce are from Asian and Western nations with an estimated 25% from the Indian subcontinent. The number of foreign workers is an estimated 60% in the UAE, and more than 50% in Kuwait. God has opened many doors of witness through the expatriate community.
