Brazil is a vast country with a warm tropical climate and an ethnically varied and hospitable people. The earliest significant Muslim presence in Brazil was apparently established several centuries ago with the arrival of thousands of black West African Muslim slaves.
The first great Arab immigration took place towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. However, this immigration was composed mainly of Orthodox Christian Arabs from Lebanon and Syria.
The second Arabic wave of immigration arrived about 40 years ago, bringing a large concentration of Muslims. The majority were involved in a variety of small- to large scale commercial activities.
Todays Brazil
Today, Brazil has a population of about 180 million, including several million people from an Arabic background. While most of them are at least nominally Christian, there are several hundred thousand Muslims (including a significant number of illegal aliens). Some estimates suggest that there are possibly over one million Muslims in Brazil, but accurate statistics are unavailable.
The Growth of Islam in Brazil
The first mosque in Brazil was built during the middle of the last century. This one gave rise to many others scattered all over the country. The region of Paran near Paraguay has the largest concentration of Muslims, followed by the city of São Paulo. Indeed, Brazil has become a hub for Islam in Latin America. During the past 30 years, Islam has succeeded in making a place for itself in Brazilian society by building not only mosques, but also libraries, arts centres, and schools and also by funding newspapers.
In addition, conversions to Islam are multiplying, especially among women who marry a Muslim and so take on the religion of their husband when they say their vows. Now, evangelical Christian Brazilians are mobilizing to face the growing Islamic presence, though not in sufficient numbers.

Some missionaries are working full-time to proclaim the Gospel to Muslims. The pressure on missionaries is enormous, particularly in large cities where Muslims have a significant presence. Despite these difficulties, the work is starting to bear fruit. A number of former Muslims have become enthusiastic missionaries. Some are working in Brazil, but some have returned to their homelands as witnesses, despite the threat of persecution and various restrictions.

* Pray that Brazilian Christians will have a greater desire to know more about Islam and the means of effectively evangelizing Muslims. Christian friendship evangelization seems to be the method which seems to bear the most fruit. Love and appreciation can dissolve the hardest heart.
* Pray for the vital ministry of the full-time missionaries working among Muslims in Brazil.
* Pray that Muslim-background believers will be able to deal with the opposition coming from their families, close relatives and friends while they continue to proclaim the Gospel.

I have visited a Muslim group in Rio several years ago and I noticed some converts there. On the other hand I've met several Muslims who came to faith in Jesus and became Christians.
The flow, however, is by far much more prominent going towards becoming Muslims. That flow rate is increasing despite all the media force to try to tarnish Islam. Allah is the Guide and it is Who turns the hearts. Allah ,the Architect, the Engineer, the Artist, the Creator of the Universe and all that it contains(galaxies, clusters, planets etc..), knows His souls and creations and He guides whom he wills. And remember on the Quran Surah 1, Verse 1 Allah says :
"In the Name of Allah , the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Praise to be Allah the Lord of the Worlds..."
The term "Worlds" is not Earth but all that exists (planets, Jinns, animals, bacteria, stars, planets, physics, temperature, time, black holes, worm holes) ..think a minute, can a man create a mosquitoe?

I'm Hispanic American and I have seen many ex-Muslims who came with their families to the US and convert to Christianity, mainly Catholicism or Protestantism.
I have witnessed how Christ comes to the hearts of those who seek him, and God does work in mysterious ways. I have had the opportunity to meet young men & women from the countries of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Lebanon, Iraq and Egypt who left Islam and become fully initiated into the Christian faith through baptism of their own will. This led me to believe that there are most likely many Muslims who wish to convert to other faiths, and Christianity particularly, but who cannot for fear of persecution and death that they often face from community pressure and harassment or intimidation.
Since I had the chance to ask, my question to these new Christians was "Why did you leave Islam and convert to Christianity?" And they responded to me "if you ever read the Hadiths, and you follow the prophet Muhammeds actions, it is incompatible with the teachings of Christ - love, mercy, forgiveness - God is called Love in the Scriptures, He is thought of as a fatherly loving being - but the Quran never calls God love, and Muslims do not believe God is a fatherly being because they do not believe God is a man or woman."
I was quite surprised by the response, but then I was learning to understand where they were coming from. And I also learned that the majority of Arabs in the US are Christians, who share and practice the same sacraments as Catholics. Then again, Christianity was on the Arabian Peninsula way before islam was. There are 6 million Muslims who convert to Christianity each year, and it is growing.
Anyway, I was very blessed to meet ex-Muslim converts to Christianity. In the future, we will see a growing number of Christian converts from Muslim countries because that's the way it is in a globalized world - with the exchange of ideas, migration of people, and different faiths.

EVERY surah in the Qur'an begins with "In the name of God the Beneficent the Merciful" and one of God's 'beautiful names' is 'al-Ghaffar', the Forgiver, so how can any fool believe that we don't believe in mercy and forgiveness? Throughout the Holy Qur'an, the love of God is expressed and emphasized, as well as what God does not love and how we can earn His love. As Muslims we believe that God's love his shown through his signs and creation.
As for your false claim about our Prophet's teachings (pbuh), there are several authentic hadiths that attest to the fact that he promoted peace, love and forgiveness to fellow Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Unlike the wars mentioned in the Bible, Muslims are absoluted FORBIDDEN even to wage offensive wars. Your assertion that Christianity existed on the Arabian Peninsula before Islam, well that's just false. There were NO Christians, only Jews and pagans. The Christians from the Levant traded with caravans that came from the Arabian peninsula but there was never an established Christian community in Arabia before Islam and still there isn't one and never will be one. Those Christian Arabs you met are mostly from the Levant and Egypt and they always will be. You're sitting here spreading lies; Muslim converts from Saudi Arabia? Yeah right I know that's a lie, like your claim that conversion from Islam to Christianity is growing. It's actually the other way around. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world right now and the fastest growing in converts in most of the West. For every one convert to Christianity you meet I will meet about 20 converts to Islam from all over the world. Your numbers aren't growing like that. Please stop the propaganda and pure BS.
American, thank you for sharing your experiences and reflections. It is an important question to ask ex-Muslims or ex-converts from any faith. It's a common question to ask hey why did you convert and what made you leave. It's a rational thing to ask. I'm sure there are converts going both ways. I admire aspects of Islam with its focus on worshipping God in simplicity and modesty and the Koran is poetic. As a Catholic, I can appreciate some of its beauty, just as I appreciate the beauty in aspects of Judaism and Christianity.
But the reason why I would never convert to Islam is because of Muhammad whom Muslims claim as a prophet. I read authenticated classical Arabic-language Hadiths which are hard to translate but still translatable to English. I read the hateful and disparaging sayings of this prophet. Some of his sayings were good and right in what one would expect from a messenger of God. But Muhammad seemed himself to be confused and flopping to extremes. Many of his sayings alarm the human heart, like a red flag because it goes not only against the loving teachings of Christ, but it also goes against what God Himself commands of his creation. I came to the conclusion I rather belong to a real prophet (Christ) with his teachings of compassion and love (which are in line with God's Holiness) than follow a religion whose prophet goes against, and is the anti-thesis the very basic tenents of what the human heart knows is good. "Show me your leader, and I will tell you who your God is" an old, wise parable.

Islam has become on the spotlight as much as it had been in darkness some 50 years ago. It is growing very fast. You are right about women in the West being sexualized and treated dishonorably by men who claim their faith but do quite the opposite on weekends (partying, drinking, clubbing whatever the list goes on). It is shameful and Zak is painting a broad stroak with generalizations that really don't work. In some Muslim countries that are more free and liberal, the men have a stronger and patient atitude toward their women but in some arab and south asian countries (afghanistan, iran, saudi arabia) the muslim men in those countries have no sense of the true sacredness of their women whom they stone to death, imprison and so on. Cultural influences have bearing, not all muslim countries are equal. Remember also that Western does not equate to Christianity, there are many religions practiced so do not assume a person is this or that religion because of their names, appeareances etc. because assuming that is like zak's generalizing.

It is a well known fact that one reason Greeks converted to Paul's Christianity, was because they were familiar with the "God has a Divine Son" concept that existed in Greek Mythology (e.g. Heracles). Also, if we could simply take Paul's word that he is an apostle, then with your logic, you should also accept Muhammad salallahu alayhi' wa sallam as a prophet just because he claimed to be.

IN SPITE of the mostly negative, hateful, filthy lies and propaganda being spread about Islam all over the media and Internet (just look at this website for example), and in spite of the fact that Muslims have no active missionaries around the world, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world while church attendance is dropping in cities all over the globe. Allah sent us to remove whoever He wishes from the servitude of man to the servitude of the Lord of man and from the unjust nature of other religions and systems to the justice of Islam and from the tight confinement of this dunya(world) to the vast expansion of the hereafter.
I am coming to Brazil late this year, I am a Muslim convert. I am due to begin a series of art workshops with children in the Favelas as part of an overall series of aid workshops to help those poor people. I have not told any of the organizers I am Muslim, I will not tell any of the children or organizers either unless they ask. I do not want to push my faith on anyone. I do these workshops because before converting to Islam I was a selfish person who was astray, only helping myself. Islam through it's love, and it's system of Zakat (obligatory giving financial aid to the poor) and fasting during Ramadan (to let us know what it is to starve) helped to change my heart and want to help people, whether they are muslim or not. It's a beautiful thing.
I don't see the need for friction between Christians and Muslims - we both believe in the same God, with some differences. We both try to do good in Gods name - we should be brothers and work towards a better society in Gods name. If you believe in God, and do good with God in mind, that is surely better than using all that negative energy to fight and argue.
