For many years the Muslim community in America had been a small minority but today it is one of the fastest growing religions in the country. Muslims first came to America in the 1860's from Syria and Lebanon. Today it is estimated that there are between 6 to 7 million Muslims in America, roughly 2% of the entire population. First Mosque in America
The first official mosque was built in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1934. Today, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) based in Washington DC, there are more than 1,209 known mosques throughout America. The majority of mosques were established since the 1980's with a 25% increase in the number of mosques in the past 8 years. In addition to these there are hundreds of Islamic cultural centres and schools.
There are large communities of Muslims in almost every large city. Ethnically diverse, the largest community of Muslims come from South Asia (33%) followed by African-Americans (30%). Arab Muslims make up 25% of the Muslim population. While Islam is rapidly growing in every ethnic class, the highest number of Muslim converts are from the African-American community (64%). The second highest number of converts are white Americans (27%).
Muslim Visibility in America
One of the most active recruiting grounds for Islam in the USA is in university campuses where many groups have well funded and organised student programs. Key organisations such as CAIR, the Islamic Society of North America, Muslim Students Association of USA, provide religious training, education, and support to Muslim communities and campuses throughout the country.
Since the events of 11 September 2001 and the attacks in New York and Washington, the Muslim community has become increasingly visible. The Arab-American community of Brooklyn, New York, held a candlelight march near the World Trade Centre site. Soon after, Muslim leaders attended a formal gathering in the White House in Washington for the first time in history. There have also been increased attacks against America's Muslims with thousands of incidences of threats, vandalism and violence reported. Civil rights activists believe that Muslims are now more vulnerable and suffer from religious prejudice. Many American Muslims want to remove the misunderstanding and suspicion that surrounds Islam. They are trying hard to convince to others that from their perspective at least there is no place in Islam for those who resort to violent acts of terrorism.

The number of Muslims in the USA is definitely growing exponentially. I have personally witnessed many former Christians take the shahadah (ma'ashallah!). They have come from various ethnic backgrounds as mentioned in the article, although not mentioned are Latinos. Just like Christians, we come from various backgrounds and ethnicities and most of us have not changed our given names. This has allowed us to preserve our anonymity amongst non-Muslims in our respective communities. The reason for that is not out of fear but because most of us reverts feel that our worship of Allah (swa) is something personal and is no one else's business.

I don't know where you get your information from but it is completely incorrect. Muslims value the texts of Christians and Jews although they may consider the modern versions as corruptions of the original bible. They share the same belief system as other monotheistic religions in many ways. The idea of worshipping one God, following His messengers, believing in his angels, and striving to do good works on earth.
Muslims believe in all the Messengers of God from Adam, through Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus. The main difference is they believe they were all prophets and not sons of God. The other main difference is recognizing Mohammed pbuh as the last prophet sent with the same message.
I don't see why these differences seem to erase away all the other things that are taught in the religions such as kindness, acceptance, self control, honesty, forgiveness and love.

I just want to remind you that spewing out hateful and foul language does not help you, others, or the world. You need to learn to be tolerant and actually try and learn from others around you, including those you may not understand, so that we can all try to live together peacefully and productively.
We all have to share this earth and we need to learn to get along as best we can even when we have differences.
The point of having faith is to spread goodness not hatred and anger. Lead by example and you'll move the world.

Amazingly, there is no concensus on the number of Muslims in the United States. Offical sources estmate 4.5 millon; CAIR claims 8 million. Some independent sources put it at an appearently too low 2 million. An estimayrd 60,000-120,000 Americans conver to islam annually

Muslims, please stop saying that Islam is peaceful. There are plenty of people who know that's a lie. And yes, I read the Koran (lots of verses urging violence and war, describing the cruelty of Allah, an entire sura called "The Spoils" (dividing what Muhammed and his men robbed from other tribes), the famous third page of the Koran advising men to beat their wives!) and I read the biography of Muhammed (murderer,rapist,robber,pedophile). I've met lots of Muslims, too. Unfortunately, I was not very impressed. (I do feel sorry for Muslim women, though. They should all go to Heaven, considering the hell they go through here on earth.)
