Salaam Alaykum.

Thank you for asking this question. Women have the same obligations as men which are different in a few cases in order to lighten their burdens. For example, during prayer, men keep their hands close to their navels. Women are to make sure their breasts cannot be seen. There are clothing requirements for both men and women. Women, according to the Qur'an must cover their hair and must wear loose fitting clothing to make sure their private parts cannot be seen. While there are no Qur'anic verses or ahadith calling for complete covering (such as burqa or niqab) some women do it anyway. Men are to keep beards, keep their hair covered, make sure their private parts cannot be seen, and wear pants that begin and the navel and end at the ankles. Fasting during Ramadan is not required from pregnant women -they can fast after having given birth to their children. According to the ahadith, a Muslim is to be devoted first to his mother, then to his father. In fact, Muhammad, peace be upon him, once said that "paradise is at the mother's feet". You can learn more about the Islamic view of women and how Muslim women are to practice their religion in Surah al Nisa (Chapter 4 of the Qur'an, which you can find on many Islamic websites, simply by googling). I hoped this helped.

The reason that men and women are separated is because when we prostrate on the floor, it raises one's buttocks. If this happened to a woman during prayer, she could be harmed if a man were watching her. So to prevent women from being harmed and men from being sexually stimulated, we make sure men and women pray in separate rooms.

Um...what are you talking about? We DO make specific prayers to God, asking for forgiveness and help in our lives. We simply do it after we are done with the mandatory prayers to God. By postrating we completely humble ourselves before God, much like how Jesus, alayhi' salaam, and the Old Testament prophets did.

On balance, I feel the articles here are fair towards my religion. This one needs to be rewritten if you wish to accurately portray the Muslim's attitude towards prayer, and to accurately describe it.

Dear Anne, good question!

Regarding both your questions, the answer is often dependent upon where Muslim's are praying (geographical speaking).

For example, I have witnessed practically every scenario you have asked about:

a) I have seen men and women pray together under one roof
b) Mostly I see men in one room and women, if they are there, in another room (with the kids)
c) At homes, I have seen husband and wife orient their prayer mat in the direction of Mecca and pray together

It varies from country to country, area to area, sometimes mosque to mosque and certainly from home to home.

Because this website is oriented towards major Muslim countries and people groups, the general answer is that women are separated from the men. They are not allowed to be together. There are exceptions.

Trust that helps.

Hi anyone,

Do muslim women also pray 5 times a day? And if yes, where do they pray?
I have never seen pics of praying woman and am beginning to wonder if my Islamic sisters are under the same obligations as the men and from what age?
Or if something or everything regarding daily prayer is different for the girls and women in Islam?

Hope someone knows or can refer me to some pages about women practise of Islam.
Thanks!

Yours

Assalamu aleykum warahmatul,ALLAH to my muslim brother and sisters and hi to my christian friends, sory for my litle broken english! but i want to say few words and ask two quastions to one christian whose nickname kak, you start with your comments that jesus is indeed the son of GOD! And then afterwords you said that he (jesus) was and is and will be GOD! now i am asking u is he GOD or the son of GOD? we can see he is not GOD becouse he was born 2010 years ago of awoman! And your bible tels you that in the book of job 25:4-6 ......How can he be clean who is born of a woman! And if say he is the son of GOD,then how many sons he got? Luke 3:22 jesus is the son of GOD, 1Chronicle 28:6 solomon is the so son of GOD, Exodus 4:22 israel is the son of GOD even first born! Jeremiah 31:9 abraham is the son of GOD even 1st born! What make them the sons of GOD? Ok, here is the answer in your bible! Romans 8:14 for as many as are led by the spirit of GOD are the sons of GOD! Now if you say that jesus is exclusive son b,coz he had no human father which we muslims agree, what about adam who has no human father and mother? The answer is simple b,coz it is not hard for THE ALLMIGHTY GOD to create what he wants with father and mother or with a mother or with nothing! Some people misunderstood The word of GOD, 1st when a word becomes exist is after when it is spoken by somebody, now the word of GOD means a command of GOD (be) and he (jesus) was. (be) and it (the world) was. ALLAH AKBAR.

4:171. O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah anything but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an apostle of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His apostles. Say not "Trinity" : desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah. Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.

4:172. Christ disdains nor to serve and worship Allah, nor do the angels, those nearest (to Allah.: those who disdain His worship and are arrogant,-He will gather them all together unto Himself to (answer).

Peace

continued.

There is among them a section who distort the Book with their tongues: (As they read) you would think it is a part of the Book, but it is no part of the Book; and they say, "That is from Allah," but it is not from Allah. It is they who tell a lie against Allah, and (well) they know it! (Quran 3:78. )

4:47. O ye People of the Book! believe in what We have (now) revealed, confirming what was (already) with you, before We change the face and fame of some (of you) beyond all recognition, and turn them hindwards, or curse them as We cursed the Sabbath-breakers, for the decision of Allah Must be carried out.

4:48. Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything else, to whom He pleaseth; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin Most heinous indeed.

IT is also stated that the Jews and Christians were originally given a portion of the book and it is better for them to believe in the whole of it ( ie the Quran)

4:51. Hast thou not turned Thy vision to those who were given a portion of the Book? they believe in sorcery and Evil, and say to the Unbelievers that they are better guided in the (right) way Than the believers!

4:116. Allah forgiveth not (The sin of) joining other gods with Him; but He forgiveth whom He pleaseth (all) other sins than this: one who joins other gods with Allah, Hath strayed far, far away (from the right).
